Last weekend we had the first rain in 3 months or so so everything seemed a little fresher on a stroll I took afterwards. This is a mesquite tree seed pod dislodged in the high winds. I liked the arabesque of its curves on the damp sidewalk.

These bushes are very common in people's yard landscaping here in Phoenix. They are usually cut in cylinders or semi-spheres 3 to 5 feet across

I took this today on a walk around the neighbourhood. In the foreground are pampas grass heads behind which are the dried flowerets of brittle bush.

This was taken when crossing the creek in Bear Canyon near Tucson. Question. Which way is the water flowing? Left to right or vice versa? Clue - the canyon runs upwards to the north and it's p.m.

This was taken at the end of March at 7 Falls along Bear Canyon near Tucson. A superb location. I had gone scrambling up the hill side and was looking back down the vertiginous slopes. The cactus in the foreground is known as a teddy bear cholla. Its spines will penetrate a thick leather walking boot with ease. I got several in my calves during this episode through not looking where I was going. Some of them were still there a week later!

This is my friend Amit. He is an architect with his own practice here in Phoenix. He is giving us a tour of his new house in Scottsdale and is explaining one of its features. This is a small window that will project an abstract image based on the plan of the house onto a wall inside. The clever part is that this will last two minutes only and will only be at 7am on the new owners' wedding anniversary!

The palo verde which is the AZ State tree is the last to flower here. As you can see the vegetation all around is pretty much browned off. All that remains now to bloom is the the saguaro cactus and then - the fiery furnace!

The recent high winds dislodged this section from the trunk of a palm tree into the road. What does it suggest to you? A claw, an ox-skull?
